I understand that it has become normalised for creatives to work for low fees or for free — or that for those of us working in socially-focused fields, we are doing "our passion" rather than "real work" and therefore would consider working for low fees or for free. This is a very damaging belief system that enforces classism and pay discrimination, and I ask that you reflect on what you are really asking when you ask someone to work for free.

There are legitimate instances where a person, myself included, may choose to work for free. The rule of thumb is this: if my work will help you achieve your commercial objectives, then I expect to be paid for providing my services and expertise.
